THOMAS WESLEY THORPE

   Thomas Wesley Thorpe of the Statesville community died at his home early 
Wednesday morning.  Mr. Thorpe had been in declining health for some time, 
but was active up to a few days before his death.  He was one of the oldest 
men in Southampton County, having reached the ripe old age of 90 years.  His 
wife preceded him to the grave 25 years ago.

   He was a member of Barnes Methodist Church, and at one time served as 
steward of the church.

   There are six children: C.G. Thorpe, Hickory, N.C., Mrs. G.P. Vick, 
Newsoms; Mrs. A.J. Bryant, Como, N.C., L.L. Rowland and Frank Thorpe, Newsoms. 
Eight grandchildren survive him.

   Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock by his pastor, the 
Rev. L.G. Tinnell of Newsoms.  Burial was in the family cemetery.
