Mr. Thorpe had been in declining health for some time, but was active up to a few days before his death. He was one of the oldest men in Southampton County, having reached the ripe old age of 90 years. His wife preceded him to the grave 25 years ago. He was a member of Barnes Methodist Church, and at one time served as steward of the church. There are six children: C.G. Thorpe, Hickory, N.C., Mrs. G.P. Vick, Newsoms; Mrs. A.J. Bryant, Como, N.C., L.L. Rowland and Frank Thorpe, Newsoms. Eight grandchildren survive him. Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock by his pastor, the Rev. L.G. Tinnell of Newsoms. Burial was in the family cemetery. Rather, his parents were Lewis & Caroline Williams (BRYANT) THORPE, who m. 21 Aug 1847. (Southampton Co. M.Reg. p. 564) We have his brother Lewis Jr. (1857 - 1860) & their mother (1820 - 1877) listed as unmarked with his brother Argal Bernard (1848 - 1824) in another THORPE family cemetery, off Barnes Church Circle.
