VERNON DARDEN THORPE

   Vernon Darden Thorpe, age 54, died Tuesday night at his home at Statesville 
after an illness of some months.

   Mr. Thorpe was engaged in farming, lumber and real estate business, and was 
a man widely known throughout the county who possessed a large number of 
friends. He had been for many years a member of Barnes M.E. Church, and was an 
uncompromising Democrat; a member of the Newsoms District Committee, always 
taking an active interest in political affairs of the county.

   He is survived by his father, T.W. Thorpe; his wife, Mrs. Bessie Barrett 
Thorpe; three children, V.D. Thorpe, Jr., Barrett and Frances Elizabeth Thorpe; 
two sisters, Mrs. G.P. Vick of Newsoms and Mrs. A.J. Bryant of Como; four 
brothers, C.G. Thorpe of Hickory, Virginia, L.L. Thorpe of Boykins and Frank 
and Roland Thorpe of Statesville.

   Funeral services were held from his late residence Wednesday afternoon 
conducted by his Pastor, Rev. J.K. Holman, burial being made in the Thorpe 
cemetery at the home of his father.  Active pallbearers were R.B. Bryant, Jr., 
Russell Railey, J.V. Simmons, J.B. Everett and G.P. Vick.
