All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ROLAND LEE THORNE Roland Lee Thorne, 83 a resident of Franklin and formerly a farmer of the Colosse neighborhood in Isle of Wight County, died at midnight on Monday, July 7, at the home of his son, S. Henry Thorne, 603 South High Street, after an illness of several months. Mr. Thorne was the son of the late Henry and Mary Ann Thorne, and was born near Windsor in Isle of Wight County. He was a member of the Colosse Baptist Church. Endowed with the gift of attracting children and winning their esteem, Mr. Thorne was addressed by old and young by the affectionate name of "Scrap." The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lulie Hines Thorne, who lives with a daughter, Mrs. Annie T. Vaughan of Portsmouth; one son, Henry Thorne of Franklin; a brother, M.L. Thorne of Zuni; two grandchildren, Ann and Beverly Vaughan of Portsmouth, and several nieces and nephews. A twin brother, Ryland S. Thorne, died in 1940. The body was taken to the Franklin Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock. Funeral services were conducted at four o’clock by Rev. Jack V. Boyles, pastor of the Colosse Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Randolph L. Gregory and Rev. R.D. Stephenson. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, the active pallbearers being: J.G. Collier of Portsmouth, John Stephenson and Homan Powell of Walter, and Dr. T. Addison Morgan, George O. Watkins, R.H. Powell, Jr., R.S. McClenny, and Floyd Briggs of Franklin. ****************************************************************************** R. E. [sic; L.] Thorne, 83, Retired Farmer Buried July 9th. Roland Lee Thorne, 83, a resident of Franklin and formerly a farmer of the Colosse community died at the home of his son, Henry Thorne, after an illness of several months, July 7th. Besides his son he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lulie Hines Thorne; a daughter, Mrs Annie T. Vaughan, of Portsmouth; a brother, M.L. Thorne, of Zuni; two grandchildren, Ann and Beverly Vaughan, both of Portsmouth, and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Franklin Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Wednesday, where funeral services were held at 4 p.m., conducted by the Rev Jack V. Boyles, assisted by the Rev Randolph Gregory.
