All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HERBERT VIVIAN THORNTON Herbert Vivian Thornton, 65, prominent farmer and merchant of the Courtland community, died in Raiford Memorial Hospital on Sunday, June 5, after a brief illness. He had been a patient in the hospital since the Thursday night preceding his death. Mr. Thornton was a son of Erastus and Annie Lee Berry Thornton of Southampton County*. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Hundley Thornton of Courtland; two daughters, Mrs. Alice Thornton Williams of Norfolk and Mrs. Emily Dickerson of Courtland; three sisters, Mrs. Annie M. Barger of Buena Vista, Mrs. Edwin Harrison of Baltimore, Md., and Mrs. Ila B. Carroll of Miami, Fla.; and a brother, Ashton Thornton of Huntington, W.Va. Another brother was the late Hiram Clay Thornton of Suffolk, for several years a resident of Franklin. The deceased was a member of the Buena Vista Methodist Church, Buena Vista, and of Courtland Lodge No. 85, A.F. and A.M. Final rites were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery on Monday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock by Rev. L.M. Kanipe, pastor of the Courtland Baptist Church. The Courtland Masonic Lodge also officiated at the burial. Pallbearers were Warren Beale, L.A. Clements, G.S. Cornwell, Jr., Eugene Howell, Odell Joyner, Eddie Parker, Cedric Pittman and J.D.
