THORNTON EX-TELEGRAPHER FOR RAILROAD COURTLAND - William Norman Thornton, Jr., 83, retired railroad telegrapher and agent, died Saturday afternoon in his home here after an illness of many months. He was the husband of Mrs. Evie Rebecca Williams Thornton and a son of William Norman Thornton and Mrs. Indiana Briggs Thornton of Sussex County. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and a past master of Courtland Masonic Lodge 85. He was a charter member of Courtland Ruritan Club. He moved to Courtland as agent for Southern Railroad and Atlantic & Danville Railroad and remained 50 years. He retired in 1957. Besides his widow surviving are two daughters, Mrs. L.A. Clements of Courtland and Miss Evelyn Thornton of Arlington; one son, Dr. William Norman Thornton III of Charlottesville; and six grandchildren. A funeral service was held in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, Monday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Robert E. Davis, pastor of St. Luke’s Church. Masonic rites were accorded. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Boys Home in Covington. Pallbearers were Charles Urquhart, Churchill Ridley, Beaman Davis, O.H. Poates, Hatcher Story, Ben Williams, Richard Railey and Turnbull Gillette. William Norman THORNTON, Jr., retired Southern R.R. telegrapher and agent, b.
