TURNER 75-YEAR OLD SEDLEY FARMER IS KILLED BY CAR SUNDAY MORNING MATTHEW TURNER, 75, STRUCK BY AUTOMOBILE OF CASSIE VICK, COLORED VICK AWAITS HEARING Struck by an automobile as he was walking along a road near his home in the Sedley community Sunday morning between 11 and 12 o'clock, Matthew Turner 75-year old farmer, died at Raiford Hospital here shortly afterward. Mr. Turner was brought to the hospital by Aetius Boothe of Sedley and admitted at about 12:30. He died something like 15 minutes later of skull fracture and internal injuries, also sustaining a broken ankle and multiple cuts and bruises. Cassie Vick, Negro living near Holt's Store in the Corinth community, was the driver of the car that fatally injured Mr. Turner. When the accident occurred Vick was proceeding west on the Sedley-Vicksville road and Mr. Turner was walking in the opposite direction on his right side of the road and on the other side from the car, according to two Negroes who were with Vick when it happened. Vick's car crossed the road and knocked Mr. Turner down, carrying him a distance of about four feet. Jerry Williams, one of the colored men with Vick, left the scene of the accident, as did Vick. Yank Scott, the third Negro in the party, stayed around and secured help. Scott was there when Sheriff T.B. Bell and other officers arrived on the scene about 1 o'clock. The officers found Vick at his home Sunday night and jailed him pending a hearing Saturday before Trial Justice Chas. W. Davis in Courtland. Vick told conflicting stories in explanation of the accident. He said that his radius rod had dropped off, making it impossible to steer the car. He also said that Mr. Turner was on the same side of the road as the automobile. He said that he swerved over to the left to avoid hitting him and as he did Mr. Turner crossed to that side and was struck. Officers discovered that someone had been tampering with the radius rod of the car, and Vick's companions told Sheriff Bell that they had seen Vick take off his coat and approach his car with a wrench after the accident. Mr. Turner was walking on the other side of the road from the car, and was on that side when hit, they said. Vick explained his leaving the car by saying he had started walking to find help. It was around 9 o'clock when the officers picked him up. Mr. Turner is survived by a brother, Frank Turner, of Portsmouth, and a sister, Miss Rosena Turner, of Sedley. Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Black Creek Baptist Church by the pastor, the Rev. W.B. Watson, burial following in the church cemetery. Members of the men's Bible class of the church, of which the deceased was a member, were active pallbearers, and the remaining ones were honorary bearers. Matthew E.
