All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSEPH ASHLEY UMPHLETT CHESAPEAKE - Joseph Ashley Umphlett, 45, of 2912 Princeton Ave. died Friday at 9:30 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital after a short illness. A native of Franklin, he lived in this area 15 years. He was a son of the late William Joseph and Mrs. Cora Cutchins Umphlett and the husband of Mrs. Curtis Floyd Umphlett. He was a plumber for Rural Plumbing and Heating Co., and a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, William Joseph Umphlett in the Navy aboard the Cruiser Northampton, Norfolk; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Margaret Brown Whitley of Chesapeake; five sister, Mrs. Cora McLeney of Chester, Mrs. Bernice Story and Mrs. Luther Darden of Franklin, Mrs. Jessie Porter of Portsmouth and Jessie Porter of Portsmouth and Mrs. Sam Kello of Windsor; two brothers, William Joseph Umphlett Jr. of Norfolk and Carroll J. Umphlette of Richmond, and a step-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Home, Franklin, with Rev. Harold Tribble, pastor of Hunterdale Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. Pallbearers were E.M. Smith, Walter Bradshaw, Adam Coughenauer, W.A. Springer, Doc Springer and Harold Coughenauer.
