Franklin, Virginia, February 6 - Age 67, well-known farmer of Zuni community, died Friday, February 6, 1953 from a heart attack while en route to Louise Obici Hospital in Suffolk. He was the husband of Mrs. Lizzie Bradshaw Umphett of Zuni and the son of Louise Charles Umphlett and Leah Derby Umphlett of North Carolina. He was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church for many years. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. Martha U. Rhodes of Myrtle and Mrs. Mammie U. Martin of Williams; 5 sons, J. Louis Umphlett, J. Sidney Umphlett, U.S. Umphlett and Lonnie R. Umphlett Jr, all of Zuni and Gordon Lee Umphlett of Gardnersville, New York; 13 grandchildren; 1 half brother, H.E. Underwood of Franklin. The body was taken to the funeral home of W.J.M. Holland and Sons of Franklin, where it will remain until Sunday afternoon, February 8, 1953. Funeral services will be held at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church Sunday, February 8, 1953 at 3:00 pm with the Rev L.E. Holzbach, officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in one hour prior to services. Pallbearers: Talmadge Edwards, Shirley T. Holland, L.E. Eley, Ocie Bradshaw, Ernest L. Funeral services were held at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, with Rev. L.E. Holzbach officiating.
