M.J. McManus. W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home, Franklin, Va., was in charge. Pallbearers were Carl Howell, Earl Howell, Roy Howell, Edward Vaughan, Pressy Edwards, and Richard Taylor. Mrs. Umphlett, 40, died in a Portsmouth hospital Tuesday night. A native of Hopewell, she was the wife of Edward Umphlett and a daughter of Samuel Edwards and the late Mrs. Annie Powell Edwards. She was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church. Besides her husband and father, surviving are two daughter, Mrs. Brenda Stewart and Miss Gail Harrell, and a son, Garrett Harrell, all of Chesapeake; three sisters, Mrs. Helen E. Barner of McKenny, Mrs. Carroll E. Vincent of Chesapeake, and Mrs. Faye E. Archer of Como, N.C.; a brother, W.J. Edwards of Portsmouth; a grandchild; and foster parents, Sherman and Mrs. Fannie S. Howell of Como.
