All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM JOSEPH UMPHLETT William Joseph Umphlett, well-known farmer of the Franklin community, died at his home March 11, in the 53rd year of his life. He had been in failing health for the last three years, and was a hard-working and energetic farmer, esteemed by many friends and a member of Union Christian Church which he joined at the age of 15 and where he had been a member of the board of deacons for a number of years. Funeral services were conducted at the church yesterday afternoon by the Rev. R.E. Brittle, assisted by Rev. F.C. Lester of Waverly. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery here. Mrs. Umphlett died in December, 1927, and Mr. Umphlett is survived by the following children; Carroll Umphlett of Portsmouth, Misses Bernice Edna, Zella Leah, Janie, Jessie and Cora Lee Umphlett, Joseph Ashley and William Joseph Umphlett, Jr.; three brothers, L.R., W.W. and G.C. Umphlett, and a half- brother, H.E. Underwood, and one sister, Mrs. W.W. Winslow.
