A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of Mrs. Annie Laurie Applewhite Underwood and a son Edward Thomas and Mrs. Emmett Bryant Underwood of Southampton County. He was a member of High Street Methodist Church and its Men’s Bible Class. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, James Thomas Underwood, Jr., and a daughter, Miss Nancy Lou Underwood, both of Franklin; a sister, Mrs. Emily Clemons of Cincinnati; and a brother, Fred F. Underwood of Franklin. A funeral service will be held in W.J.M. Holland and Sons Funeral Chapel Saturday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Robert D. Fridley of High Street Methodist Church.
