All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JAMES HENRY VAUGHAN JAMES HENRY VAUGHAN, CONFEDERATE VETERAN DIES AT THE AGE OF 93 His Death Leaves But One Remaining Veteran in Southampton County James Henry Vaughan, 93, a lifelong resident of Southampton County and last but one of the Confederate veterans in the county, died on Thursday night of last week at the home of his son, J.T. Vaughan, in the Franklin community. George H.* Barnes of Franklin, a native of North Carolina but resident of this town for many years, is now the sole surviving veteran of the War Between the States in Southampton County. L.L. Manry of Courtland for many years a prominent veteran, and at the time of his death Commander of the Urquhart- Gillette Camp, United Confederate Veterans, died last summer. Mr. Vaughan entered the Army of the Confederacy in the fall of 1863 in the Heavy Artillery, Company "A" 18th Virginia Battalion. On April 6, 1865, the young soldier, only 19, was taken prisoner in a battle near Petersburg and carried to Newport News, then a straggling settlement of only a few houses, where he was confined in a Federal prison until July 3 of the same year. On his release he was rowed across Hampton Roads and up the Nansemond River of Suffolk, from which point he walked back to his home near Franklin. Mr. Vaughan had maintained an active interest in the work of the Urquhart- Gillette Camp and in the State and Southern organizations of the U.C.V. He was honored during recent years by appointment as Colonel and Quartermaster- General of the First Brigade, Virginia Division, U.C.V. He is survived by two sons, J.T. and H. Lee Vaughan of Franklin; a daughter, Mrs. Addie Blythe; a sister, Mrs. Addie E. Harcum, all of Franklin, and by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted from the Franklin Baptist Church, in which the deceased held membership, last Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, assisted by Rev. F.P. Davis of Courtland. Burial followed in Poplar Spring Cemetery here. Pallbearers were Frank Edwards, J. Edward Moyler, Geo. H. Parker, Jesse McClenny, Hunter Darden, W.L. Taylor, Walter Beale, Jr., and F.A. Holloman. -The newspaper included a photo of the decedent.
