PASSES HERE AFTER A LONG AND USEFUL LIFE Mrs. Kate Keith Vaughan, widow of General C.C. Vaughan, who died in 1929, and prominently connected both here and in her native State, Tennessee, died at her home last Friday night after an illness of many weeks. The daughter of the late Alexander Hume Keith and Mrs. Sarah Force Keith, Mrs. Vaughan was born in Athens, Tenn., July 15, 1865, and had been a resident of Franklin for 53 years, where she was an honored and highly useful citizen. Her life interest was in her family and in the work of her church. Mrs. Vaughan having been actively engaged in Sunday school work in High Street Methodist Church ever since she came to Franklin as the bride of General Vaughan, and had taught in the Sunday school during all of that time, being the head of many of the departments of the school, and at the time of her death Supt. of the Cradle Roll of the school. During her long service in the Sunday school she had literally taught three generations of pupils. She was educated at Wesleyan Institute, Staunton, Va., where she was a classmate of Mrs. R.J. Camp of this town, her sister-in-law. Being a member of a family long prominent in military affairs, she was a charter member of Southampton Unit No. 73, American Legion Auxiliary, and of Great Bridge Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a charter member of the Woman’s Missionary Society of High Street Methodist Church and active in that organization. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Charles Lee Smith of Raleigh, Mrs. Clifford A. Cutchins, Jr. and Miss Katherine Keith Vaughan of Franklin, and a son, Cecil Calvert Vaughan, 3rd, of this town. She also leaves three grandchildren, Clifford A. Cutchins, 3rd, a student at Virginia Tech, Misses Sarah Keith Cutchins and Katherine Vaughan Cutchins of Franklin; one sister, Mrs. J.B. Frazier of Chattanooga, Tenn., and a sister-in-law, Mrs. R.J. Camp of this town. Funeral rites were conducted from the Vaughan residence in North High Street Sunday afternoon, March 2, at 3 o’clock by the Rev. Roscoe Jones of Richmond, a former pastor of Mrs. Vaughan’s assisted by the Rev. B.B. Bland, pastor of High Street Methodist Church. Burial was made in the family plot in Poplar Spring Cemetery, and the active bearers were: Dr. Beaman Story, Franklin Edwards, J.L. Camp, Jr., John M. Camp, Edgar B. Jackson, J. Edward Moyler, J.J. Pace, Jno. C. Parker, Jr., J. Edward Gilliam and S.W. Rawls. Honorary bearers were: George H. Parker, Dr. Burton J. Ray, W.T. Pace, Hugh D. Camp, Ryland Camp, J.W.B. Thompson, R.B. Turner, Thos. D. Boone of Norfolk, Alex W. Parker of Richmond, Joe Bynum Gay, I.T. Van Patten, Jr. of Norfolk, General E.E. Goodwyn of Emporia, General S. Gardner Waller of Richmond and Roger I. Beale.
