VAUGHAN, SR. DIES CHRISTMAS DAY At the residence in North High Street died at 3:45 o’clock Christmas afternoon Mrs. Margaret Gunter (Bryant) Vaughan, in the 78th year of her life. She had been in failing health for more than a year, suffering from a complication of diseases and the infirmities of age and had been wholly confined to her bed since Easter, when she sat in a chair at the window for a few minutes. All that could possibly have been done to ease her pain and make her comfortable during her last illness was done by the doctors and nurses in attendance and by her devoted daughter. Mrs. Vaughan was born in Enfield, N.C., on July 28, 1867, the daughter of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Hunter) Gunter. Through her mother she was descended from the John Branch who was thrice Governor of North Carolina, United States Senator, Secretary of the Navy under Andrew Jackson, and Governor of the Territory of Florida. She was educated at old Peace Institute in Raleigh. A visitor of Franklin in her girlhood, Mrs. Vaughan was married in December, 1888, to the late Dr. James Fenton Bryant, a distinguished practitioner in Southampton County and first Mayor of Franklin. Dr. Bryant died on January 16, 1909. Six years after his death the widow married on April 15, 1915, Cecil C. Vaughan, Sr., Franklin banker and business man, who died July 27, 1924. An only son, Andrew Gunter Bryant, died on March 8, 1911. Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Bryant Jones, and two grandsons, Joseph John Jones, Jr. and Fenton Bryant Jones, all of Franklin; and by her sister, Mrs. John Boseman, three nieces and two nephews, all of Enfield, N.C. She had long been a faithful and consistent member of High Street Methodist Church. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in the family plot in Poplar Spring cemetery Wednesday morning, December 27, at 11 o’clock, with Rev. Ernest W. Aaron of High Street Methodist Church officiating, assisted by Rev. Benjamin B. Bland of Portsmouth, a former pastor. Rev. Mr. Aaron read the burial service and delivered the invocation, while Rev. Mr. Bland read Tennyson’s immortal "Crossing the Bar" and pronounced the benediction. The pallbearers were Dr. J.D. Hough, who had attended Mrs. Vaughan throughout her long illness, J.B. Gay, Jr., G.E. Pillow, C.C. Vaughan, 3rd, J. Edward Moyler, Jr., P.R. Camp and James L. Camp, Jr. Among those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. John Boseman, Mrs. Charles Loughlin, Mrs. John M. Sherrod, and Miss Winnie Boseman of Enfield, N.C., and Miss Loulie Drew Barham of Suffolk. Margaret (GUNTER BRYANT; Mrs. Cecil C.
