Vincent, well-known lumberman and philanthropist of Southampton County, died at her home in Capron Tuesday, September 25, in the 65th year of her age. Mrs. Vincent, who before her married was Miss Carey, daughter of William Handy and Charlotte E. Carey, of Salisbury, Md., had made her home in Capron for the last 40 years, she and her husband moving to Virginia soon after they were married. She was widely known in community work in Southampton County and in church circles throughout Virginia. Mrs. Vincent possessed the rare qualities of a big soul - breadth of vision, broad and ready sympathies, untiring energy and enthusiasm, combined with sound judgment and a wonderful ability to get things done. Her strong personality touched every phase of community life for good. Having no children of her own, her mother-heart took in all children. The Virginia Conference Orphanage, of which she and her husband were prime mover in founding, was her especial care. She worked untiringly for the child life of the community, and the new high school building was largely the result of her efforts. She was president of the Civic League from its organization until ill health forced her to resign. But it was the church that was nearest to her heart, the great love of her life; and for it she gave unsparingly and unceasingly of her time and her talents. She was the founder of the Ladies’ Aid Society and remained it’s a charter member of the Woman’s Missionary Society and of the W.C.T.U. The motto of her life was "Let us work together, with one accord," and her influence was for peace and harmony. She found a virtue where others found a fault; the cheer of her presence turned a frown into laughs and a tear into a smile. She softened wrath in others and herself bore no malice. She possessed a genius for making and holding friends. It is as a friend that we knew her best and loved her most, and because of this her going is a personal loss to the whole community. The funeral services were held in the Capron Methodist Church Thursday, September 27 at 3 o’clock p.m., the Rev. C.H. Fielding officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. W.W. Staley of Suffolk and A.K. Lambdin of Wakefield. She was buried in Capron cemetery by the side of her husband, he Sunday school class of ten small boys helping to take care of many and beautiful flowers. The active pallbearers were: Joseph Carey of Kinston, N.C., Frank Carey of Maryland, John Vincent of Suffolk, Edward Lankford and Gordon Vincent of Emporia, Howard and Fred Bounds and John Wyche, Jr. of Weldon, N.C. Mrs. Vincent is survived by one sister, Mrs. Clara E. Hearn, of Fruitland, Md.; three brothers, W.T. Carey, Fruitland; Euphrates Carey, Salisbury and W.P. Carey, Fruitland, Md.; and an adopted daughter, Mrs. E.E. Rawlings of Capron; a number of nieces and nephews, among whom are Mrs. G.A. Lankford and L.W. McGrath of Capron.
