All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CELESTIA GOODRICH WEBB MISS WEBB, LONG A TEACHER IN FRANKLIN, DIES AT HOME FRANKLIN, Dec. 5 - Miss Celestia Goodrich Webb, one of Franklin’s oldest citizens, died Sunday morning at her home on West First Avenue. "Miss Lessie," as she was known to her friends, was the daughter of Captain Louis Henry Webb of the North Carolina Artillery, Confederate army, and Gattie Anna Lawrence Webb, of South Quay, Nansemond County. She was born in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina, Dec. 13, 1866, and moved to Franklin in her early childhood. Miss Webb began her long career of teaching in Chowan County, N.C. She later taught in Gatesville, N.C., and Holland, Va. and in 1900, she collaborated with her sister Miss Fannie Webb in establishing the Euphradian Institute in Franklin and taught there until 1930, when the institute was discontinued. From 1930 until her recent illness, she taught in the Webb School of Business in Franklin. Throughout her varied career Miss Webb gained repute as a accomplished scholar of English and music. She was recognized locally as a poet of merit and number of her poems were published. Miss Webb was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, for which she was organist for over 15 years. Her club activities included Franklin Music Club and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Surviving her are two sisters, Miss Fannie Webb and Miss Gattie Webb, both of Franklin, the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
