WEBB TAUGHT FOR 50 YEARS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Nov. 2 - Robert Henning Webb, professor of Greek at the University of Virginia for nearly 40 years and a teacher of the classics for half-century, died early Sunday morning at the University Hospital. He was 70. The graduate of Hampton-Sydney College in 1902; Dr. Webb received one masters degree from the same school 2 years later and a second from the University of Virginia in 1904. He went to Harvard University for his degree of doctor of psychology [which] was awarded in 1912. START OF CAREER He first became a teaching fellow at Hampton-Sydney in 1901, was an instructor in Latin at the University of Virginia from 1904 to 1906 and an instructor in Greek and Latin at Harvard for three years beginning in 1909. In 1912 he returned to Virginia as professor of Greek, a position he held until he retired recently. He remained active in the classics, recently completing the translation of a play of Aristophanes. Dr. Webb was a member of the managing committee of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and held membership in American and British Philosophical Associations, the Raven Society, Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Kappa Alpha. For many years he was a member of the University of Virginia Senate. Interested in music and active in musical organization, he was an organizer of the Virginia Music Festival of the Charlottesville Evening Concert Group. Born in Suffolk, Va., on Feb. 21, 1882, he was the son of the late Joseph Prestis Webb and Annie Jordan Darden Webb. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Blanche Farrington Miller Webb; one son, Dr. Joseph P. Webb, II, of Kalamazoo, Mich., and four grandchildren, Jordan, Katherine, Jane and Robert H. Webb, III. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at the University, where he was vestryman for many years. Interment will follow at Suffolk.
