Washington Boykins - Mrs. Josephine Turner Washington, 84, died at her residence here Monday at 11 a.m. after a long illness. She was the widow of William Eli Washington and a daughter of John Thomas and Mrs. Mary Whitley Turner. She was a member of Capron Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. W.H. Artis of Wildwood, N.J., Mrs. F.L. Edwards of Smithfield, Mrs. M.C. Simmons of Waverly and Mrs. Frank Ollice of Portsmouth: eight sons, W.T. Washington of Suffolk, J.R. Washington of Greensboro, N.C., George E. Washington of Hampton, Matthew T. Washington and James E. Washington, both of Norfolk, Joseph Washington of Boykins, A.A. Washington of Jacksonville, N.C., and Lewis R. Washington, USMC, Long Beach, Calif.; 25 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one brother, J.H. Turner of Isle of Wight Court House. A funeral service was held at H.M. Purviance Funeral Home today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Ben B. Ussery, pastor of Boykins Baptist Church, and the Rev. Dalphon Thompson, pastor of Capron Baptist Church. Burial was in Washington family cemetery. Pallbearers were Louis Smith, John E. Johnson, O.W. Kirkland, J.S. Owens, Ernest Cutchins, David Barnes, David Sykes, C.W. Smith and Raymond Parker. Josephine (TURNER; Mrs. William E.) WASHINGTON, Isle of Wight Co. native, d. 21 Mar 1960, at home, Boykins, age 84, interred in the WASHINGTON family cemetery (unmarked*), 24 Mar 1960, "The Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), Mar. 24, 1960 *Apparently Josephine and husband William were re-interred in Beechwood Cemetery (Annex 3, Section J, Plot 13), along with 2 sons, Joseph (1907-2001) and Lewis R. (1915-1963).
