Matthew Turner, Jr., oldest child of Matthew T. and Grace Johnson Washington, was born February 8, 1929, on the farm of his paternal grandparents, and it was there that he played the beautiful years of his short life. A bright happy little boy he was, loved by all who knew him. He always felt the responsibility of his baby sister, taking her by the hand and leading her in places of safety, though he was only a baby himself. He was trying to protect her when the fatal accident came. While playing together in the yard Friday a mule running around kicked the child over and stepped on him, jumping over the baby sister. He lingered until Saturday morning. Death relieved his little suffering body in the early hours of the day. All that Dr. Applewhite and loving hands could do were done, but - "God wanted him where his little ones meet/ That he might play with him on the golden street. He had grown too fair, he had grown too sweet/ For the world he used to live in. He needed the sunshine, this dear little boy,/ That gilds this side of the gates of joy." Funeral services were conducted from the home of his parents Sunday afternoon by Rev. R.L. Haga, and tenderly he was laid to rest by the side of his maternal grandfather in the Capron cemetery while Mrs. H.M. Purviance sweetly sang "Does Jesus Care?" The body bearers were his uncles, James, Augustine and Joseph Washington and Marshall Johnson, and the little mound was covered with beautiful flowers borne by Hilda Washington, Gloria Edwards, Esmond Miles, Clara Belle Smith, Daisy Bell Fuller and Virginia Fuller.
