All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ GEORGE WASHINGTON WADE GEORGE WADE, GOOD CITIZEN AND PIONEER DAIRYMAN, IS DEAD George Washington Wade died here Saturday afternoon, in his 68th year, after an illness of long duration. Mr. Wade, a native of this county, was the son of the late James Robert and Mrs. Elizabeth Fowler Wade. He had lived in the Franklin community for about 32 years, and after serving for some years, and after serving for some years as manager of the P.D. Camp Dairies, he engaged in the ice and ice cream business, but later returned to dairying, establishing his own business, in which he was eminently successful and was generally regarded as the father of the dairy industry in the Franklin area, which, following his initial efforts, has reached large proportions. He was active in organizing the Norfolk Co-Operative Milk Producers Association and was president of this concern from its organization until his death. Mr. Wade was a member of Black Creek Baptist Church, and a consistent member of the Bruner Bible Class of the Franklin Baptist Church, being a constant attendant of the class so long as his strength permitted. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Ellen Wade*; four daughters, Mrs. Joe W. Rogers, of Emporia; Mrs. Raymond S. Morris, of Norfolk; Mrs. Harold S. Atkinson and Mrs. John B. Watson, of Franklin; two grandchildlren, Harold S. Atkinson, Jr., and John B. Watson, Jr., of Franklin; one sister Mrs. Pattie Brett**, of Ivor; three brothers, J. Kenneth Wade of Black Creek; Herman Wade, of Ivor, and Eddie Wade, of Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted from his residence Monday at noon, conducted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of the Franklin Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. W.B. Watson of Black Creek Church, Dr. William T. Scott of the Christian Church, and the Rev. Ben Lynes of Emporia. During the services, Mrs. L.B. Norfleet, Mrs. W.T. Scott, E.K. Brinkley and Dr. Darden W. Jones sang, Mrs. Samuel B. Cutchins accompanying. The pallbearers were Fenton Cobb, George Watkins, Edgar Weede, R.C. Councill, P.R. Camp, S.W. Rawls, R.J. Howell and J. Fenton Matthews. Burial was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery.
