All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ EULA EVA HILL BRETT WHITFIELD Mrs. Eva Hill Whitfield Mrs. Eva Hill Whitfield, well-known resident of Handsom, died Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a Williamsburg hospital after an illness of more than two years. Mrs. Whitfield was the daughter of the late James and Mrs. Mary Johnson Brett* of Hertford County, N.C. She was twice married, first to Samuel Louis [sic; Lewis] Hill of Southampton County and 20 years ago to Joseph C. [sic] Whitfield of Handsom. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Jessie Story and Mrs. Edward Story of Newsoms and Mrs. Charlie Baugham of Norfolk; four sons, George Lewis Hill of Newsoms, James Britt Hill of Portsmouth, Samuel Thomas Hill of Roanoke and Eppa P. Hill of Baltimore, Md.; 30 grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren; three brothers, Leo Brett of Zuni, Jimmie Guy Brett of Como, N.C. and Hubert Brett of Suffolk; four sisters, Mrs. Rosa Hill and Mrs. James Story, both of Norfolk, Mrs. Bannie B. Williams of Gates County, N.C., and Mrs. Blanche B. Gray of Courtland, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in Barnes Methodist Church by Rev. O.L. Gouchenour, pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were Russell Brett, Roy Hill, James Story, Dick Drake, Cleveland Johnson and Charles Baugham. *The text, as originally published, gave her maiden name as BRITT - changed to BRETT throughout. His step-mother (1855 - 1930) applied for a pension 28 Jun 1924 in Southampton Co. Her father left will 23 Oct 1903, proved 16 Dec 1915. (Hertford Co., NC, WB D:373-75) Her sister Rosa m. Samuel's brother "Willie" HILL. They are buried in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins - Annex 2, Plot 67.
