WHITFIELD, FORMER SUPERVISOR, PASSES E. Whitfield, a former member of the Southampton County Board of Supervisors from Jerusalem District and from many years a prominent citizen of Courtland, died at his home there last Sunday morning following in illness of two weeks. Mr. Whitfield was 69 years old. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Davis Whitfield, whom he married in 1895; a daughter, Mrs. John D. Riddick of Roanoke; a son, Newton Whitfield of Courtland; five brothers, R.T. and June Whitfield of Courtland, W.K. Whitfield of Berlin, S.T. Whitfield of Wakefield and J.E. Whitfield of Sedley; three sisters, Mrs. W.T. Johnson of Ivor, Mrs. A.J. Hancock of Berlin and Mrs. L.A. Presson of Wakefield; three grandsons, John D. Jr., William and Robert Riddick of Roanoke and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Whitfield entered the mercantile business in Courtland in 1893, a few years later affiliating with the Courtland Methodist Church, of which he was a steward for thirty years. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class of that church and took an active interest in every phase of church activities. Mr. Whitfield was prominent in the civic life of Courtland and served as town councilman for 30 years, acting as mayor for two different terms. He was a member of the Courtland Ruritan Club. Elected to the county Board of Supervisors from Jerusalem District in elections of 1923, '27 and '31, he served in that capacity for 12 years. Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by his pastor, Rev. A.W. Roten, assisted by Rev. R.P. Riddick of Lynchburg. J. Edgar Weede of Franklin was music accompanist, Mrs. C.W. Parker singing "I Will Not Forget Thee." The casket was covered with a pall of Ascension lilies, the floral tributes being numerous and beautiful. Pallbearers were: George Riddick, F.L. Davis, Jas. T. Gillette, M.P. Sebrell, C.W. Parker, H.B. McLemore, Jr., Chas. W. Davis and T.H. Birdsong, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Board of Supervisors, county officers and friends of the family. Interment was made in Courtland Cemetery.
