WHITFIELD ONE KILLED AND THREE ARE HURT IN CAR WRECKS J.W. Whitfield of Berlin Fatally Injured Near Wakefield; Franklin People In Accidents WET ROADS ARE BLAMED One person was killed and three injured in automobile accidents occurring over the past week-end and through to have been caused to some extent by wet roads throughout this section. J.W. Whitfield of Berlin was fatally injured in a collision on Route 460, the Suffolk-Petersburg highway last Friday night, dying Sunday morning in a Suffolk hospital. Mrs. L.J. Fisher of Franklin and her sister, Miss Ruth Owens of Suffolk, were painfully injured in an accident between Holland and Suffolk Saturday afternoon, and on the same day around noon Adolph Cutchin of Franklin sustained injuries when the truck he was driving went over an embankment near Murfreesboro. Mr. Whitfield was traveling towards Suffolk when his car was said to have sideswiped a truck allegedly owned by W.S. Cross Company and driven by J.C. Duke of Suffolk, en route to Baltimore and loaded with spinach. The accident happened at a point near Wakefield at about 10 o’clock. The truck driver and his assistant Jobie Jones, escaped with minor injuries, while Mr. Whitfield sustained a fractured skull and internal injuries. Mr. Whitfield, who was 40 years old, is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Whitfield of Berlin, and a brother, Herman Whitfield of Farmville. He was well-known and loved in his community. He was an active member of Millfield Baptist Church. Services were held from the church Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his pastor, the Rev. George Kissinger, III. The choir sang "Beautiful Garden of Prayer" and "Have Thine Own Way, Lord," accompanied by Mrs. B.H. Lane of Ivor. Floral offerings were many, the casket being covered with a pall of rose buds, calla lilies and ferns. Pallbearers were L.R. Bracey, J.H. Felts, Thomas and Douglas Pulley, Robert Taylor, Herman Wade, Raby Cornwell and Garland Davis. Members of his Sunday School Class and friends of the family were honorary pallbearers. Burial was in the Millfield Cemetery. In the accident injuring Mrs. Fisher and Miss Owens the two ladies were on their way to Franklin Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Fisher driving Miss Owens’ car. Their automobile was in collision with a car said to have been driven by Edward Everett of Holland. Mrs. Fisher sustained a fractured ankle, two broken ribs and deep cuts on the nose and lips. Miss Owens sustained five broken ribs, a fractured right wrist and fracture of the index finger of the left hand, besides cuts and bruises. The ladies were carried to Franklin and admitted to Raiford Hospital, where their condition is said to be good. The accident involving Mr. Cutchin occurred about noon Saturday. Mr. Cutchin, who is employed by Hygeia Ice Company here, was returning from Ahoskie in the company’s delivery truck with three Negros when his when his truck was in collision with a horse and cart about half a mile from Murfreesboro. The truck went over a 30-foot embankment on the right side of the road. Mr. Cutchin sustained three fractured ribs and a dislocation of the right shoulder. He was given first aid treatment by a Murfreesboro physician and returned to Franklin. He is confined to his bed at his home in the community and is described as doing very well. None of the three Negroes were seriously hurt. Jasper W.
