Cotton Loses Brother In Korea Recently Cpl. S.E. Whitfield Jr., 24, son of Mrs. Clara Drake Whitfield and the late S.E. Whitfield, of Handsom, was killed in action in Korea January 19 [sic; 29], his mother was notified by the Department of Defense. Corporal Whitfield, who had been in action in Korea since hostilities began last summer, was serving his second tour of duty with the Army. He first volunteered in 1946 and served an 18-month enlistment. He reentered the Army in March 1949. At the time of his death, he was with Co. B, 65th Engineer Combat Battalion, 25th Division. Beides his mother, he is survived by theree sisters, Mrs. Fred Allen of Long Island, N.C.; Mrs. Howard Cotton, Smithfield, and Mrs. Henry Whitaker, Newsoms; three brothers, Eley Whitfield, Thomas Whitfield and Joe Whitfield, all of Handsom, and several nieces and nephews. ****************************************************************************** SOLDIER KILLED IN KOREAN WAR TO BE BURIED HERE TODAY The remains of Cpl. Samuel E. Whitfield, 25, son of Mrs. Clara Drake Whitfield of this county and the late S.E. Whitfield, who was killed in action on January 29, last, while serving in Korea, arrived in Franklin on Thursday morning of this week. Funeral services will be held at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery this (Friday) afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, with Rev. R.L. Chadwick, pastor of the Newsoms Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be with full military honors, members of Battery B, 129th AA Bn., acting as pallbearers. At the time of his death Cpl. Whitfield was with Company B Engineers, 25th Division. Besides his mother he is survived by three brothers, Joseph and Eley Whitfield of Handsom and Thomas Whitfield of Franklin; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Allen of Wilmington, Del., Mrs. Howard Cotton of Smithfield, and Mrs. Henry Whitaker of Newsoms; and a number of nephews and nieces. ****************************************************************************** Soldier Killed In Korean Conflict Buried October 19 The remains of Cpl.
