All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SAMUEL ELEY WHITFIELD Samuel Eley Whitfield, 72, a well-known farmer of the Handsom community, died Thursday morning, November 25, at Raiford Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A member of the Sunbeam Baptist Church, he was the husband of Mrs. Clara Drake Whitfield and the son of the late William Eley and Susan Williams Whitfield of this county. Surviving him, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Howard Cotton of Smithfield, Mrs. Fred M. Allen of Long Island City, N.Y., and Mrs. Henry B. Whitaker of Newsoms; four sons, William Eley, Samuel E., Jr., Thomas E. and Joe D. Whitfield, all of Handsom; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Miss Effie Whitfield and Mrs. Woodard Britt of Portsmouth and Mrs. Herman Vick of Franklin. Funeral services for Mr. Whitfield were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery on Saturday afternoon at three o’clock by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Portsmouth and Rev. L.M. Kanipe of Courtland. The pallbearers were Roy Edwards, George Watkins, Julian Carter, Ralph Porter, Lloyd Bryant, Gordan Bridges, Charles Crumpler and Collin Whitley.
