Holland & Sons Funeral Home, Franklin by the Rev. Bryan Halstead of Colonial Heights Methodist Church. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin. Pallbearers were Maxwell Watkins, Winfred Watkins, James Potts, Benjamin Potts, Maxwell Newton and Leslie Powell. Watkins, 70, retired educator and businessman, died Wednesday night in his home after a heart attack. He was retired superintendent of Southampton schools and former principal of Capron and Franklin high schools. A native of Dinwiddie County, he was the husband of Mrs. Gustava Powell Watkins and a son of Henry W. and Mrs. Frances Scott Watkins. He was a graduate of Randolph Macon College and the University of Virginia. He was a member of Courtland Methodist Church and its Men’s Club, and Courtland Ruritan Club, a former Rotarian, and a member of National and Virginia Teachers associations. He was consultant for Brunswick Academy and manager of Southampton Finance Co. He was an Army veteran of World War I. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, B.T. Watkins, Jr. of Honolulu; a brother, Garland W. Watkins of Dinwiddie County; four sisters, Mrs. R.P. Newton of Petersburg, and Mrs. Adelaide Ford, Mrs. Wilson Ford, and Mrs. Stanley Potts of Dinwiddie County; and five grandchildren.
