She had been ill several months. Mrs. Whitley was the widow of Josephus Whitley, of Como, and daughter of the late James Brett and Emma Jane Whitley Brett. She was a member of New Hope Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. J.P. Cunningham, of Como and Mrs. Willie Cunningham of Franklin, Va.; six sisters, Mrs. Rosa Hill of Portsmouth; Mrs. Della Bowles and Mrs. Mary Story, of Suffolk, Va.; Mrs. Eva Whitfield, of Handsom, Va.; Mrs. Blanche Gray, of Boykins, Va., and Mrs. Venie Williams of Gatesville; five brothers, W.L. and Jimmy Guy Brett of Como; L.E. Brett, of Franklin, Va., Leo Brett, of Zuni, Va., and Hubert Brett of Holland, Va.; two granddaughters and a grandson. The body now at Holland Funeral Home, Franklin, Va. will be taken to New Hope Methodist Church for services Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. John W. Morrison. Her step-mother (1855 - 1930) applied for a pension 28 Jun 1924 in Southampton Co. Her father left will 23 Oct 1903, proved 16 Dec 1915. (Hertford Co., NC, WB D:373-75) Her father & step-mother are buried in the New Hope Church Site Historic Cemetery, near Como, Hertford Co., NC.
