A native of Hertford County, N.C., he was a son of James Everett and Mrs. Annie Laurie Edwards Whitley and the husband of Mrs. Hortense Dunlow Whitley. He was a member of High Street Methodist Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Edward C. Whitley Jr. of Franklin; five brothers, Joe Whitley and Irvin Whitley of Franklin, Jim Whitley of Como, N.C., Robert Whitley of Franklin, and George Whitley of Newsoms; three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd Story, Mrs. Marvin Porter, and Mrs. W.C. Butler of Franklin; four half sister, Mrs. Wallace Worrell of Como, N.C., Mrs. John Kennedy of Norfolk, Mrs. Leo Britt of Zuni, and Mrs. E.L. Ferrell of Franklin; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert E. Fridley. Burial was in Southampton Memorial Park. Pallbearers were his nephews, Marvin Worrell, Morris Worrell, Andrew Drake, Walter Story, Wallace Butler, Bobby Whitley, Jerry Whitley, Gilbert Porter and Harris L. Drake.
