He was a native of Southampton County and was a son of Thomas C. and Mrs. Florence Newsom Whitley. He was a member of Drewryville Methodist Church and a retired Norfolk Naval Shipyard machinist. He lived in Portsmouth many years. He is survived by three daughters; two sisters, Miss Elizabeth Whitley of Windsor, N.C., and Mrs. John H. Rogaleskie of Tampa, Fla.; and an uncle, Charlie L. Newsom of Drewryville, in whose home he was reared. A funeral service was conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Newsoms Cemetery by the Rev. J.S. Peebles of Drewryville Methodist Church and the Rev. Dalphon J. Thompson of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, Drewryville. In lieu of flowers the family suggested donations to American Cancer Society.
