A funeral service for Garnett E. Whitley Sr., 78, of South Quay Rd., Franklin, was held Monday at 2 p.m. in W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Ira D. Hudgins and the Rev. Rudolph Kidd. Burial was in Southampton Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Matthew Turner, George Vaughan Fred Rabil, Church Ridley, Walter Bishop, Maxie Day, Bob Sandlin and James T. Gillette Jr. Whitley died Saturday in Southampton Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of Mrs. Naomi Hedgepeth Whitley and a son of Ben and Annie Smith Whitley. He was a Baptist. He was a farmer and a veteran of World War I. Besides his wife, surviving are three sons, Franklin E. Whitley and Garnett E. Whitley, Jr., both of Franklin, and Bertram M. Whitley of Chapman, Ala.; four sisters, Mrs. Doris Vaughan of Winston, N.C., Mrs. Louise Evans, Mrs. Clara Stephenson, and Mrs. Mary McGloughan, all of Portsmouth; two brothers, R. Smith Whitley and Sam Whitley, both of Murfreesboro, N.C. and four grandchildren. Garnett* Emerson WHITLEY, Sr., farmer, Army veteran of WW-I, b. His draft registration cards for WW-I & WW-II both give Garnett Emerson, Como, NC (res. Como 1917; Franklin 1942).
