W. Waterfield of Franklin, was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon when struck by a truck on South Street at the intersection with Walnut. The child was carried to Raiford Hospital, dying there about 9:30 that night. Injuries were found to consist of fractured skull, fractured pelvis, broken leg and multiple bruises. Burnell Speight, driver of the truck, which was owned by the W. H. Scott Construction Company, was arrested on technical charges and a hearing conducted Tuesday night, a witness to the accident described it as unavoidable. Speight was released on bond. O. W. Waterfield, father of the child, moved to Franklin with his family several weeks ago, being employed here as a pile driver at the pulp mill. Funeral services were held yesterday (Thursday) morning at 10:00 o’clock, Rev. A. McK. Reynolds officiating. Burial was made in Poplar Springs Cemetery, the casket being covered with red roses and lilies of the valley.
