Death rode in the cockpit yesterday afternoon about four o’clock when a Piper Cub training plane flown by William Linkes "Curly" Wolfe, 30, of Carrsville crashed into a peanut patch on the Henry Pruden farm near that place, fatally injuring the pilot. According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Wolfe, who was on familiar terms with everyone in the Carrsville community, was apparently stunting just before the crash. A colored man, working in the peanut field, stated that the plane dived so low that it almost hit him, and that the pilot could not gain altitude quickly enough to avoid plunging to the earth. Mr. Wolfe, the sole occupant of the plane, which was from Franklin Airport, lived about twenty minutes after the accident. Dr. T.A. Morgan, who was summoned to the scene of the crash, discovered that the flier’s neck and back were broken and his face was severely lacerated. The body was brought to the W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements had not been complete last night, pending the arrival of the victim’s mother from Roanoke. Mr. Wolfe, a native of Marion, was the son of John and Gertrude Wolfe of Roanoke, and the husband of the former Lillian Lee Barrett of Carrsville, whom he married in 1940. An employee of the Taggart Corporation, he was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. amphibious forces in the Pacific for three years, seeing much duty at Okinawa. He was learning to fly under the G.I. Bill of Rights. The deceased is survived by his wife and two sons, John Wolfe of Roanoke and William Edward Wolfe of Carrsville; two sisters, Mrs. Dolores Cole and Mrs. Nellie Sexton of Roanoke; and two nieces, also of Roanoke. ****************************************************************************** PLANE CRASH VICTIM BURIED HERE SUNDAY Funeral services for William Linkes "Curly" Wolfe, student flier who died from injuries sustained last Thursday afternoon, October 2, when the Piper Cub training plane he was piloting crashed into a peanut field of the Henry Pruden farm near Carrsville, were held from the resident in Carrsville on Sunday afternoon at four o’clock.
