WILKINSON Former City Manager E.N. Wilkinson Dies at Franklin FRANKLIN - Edward Nelson (Ned) Wilkinson, 50, former city manager of Suffolk and well known Franklin resident, died Saturday night in a Franklin hospital after a short illness. At the time of his death, Mr. Wilkinson was director of public activities for Union Bag-Camp Corp. Mr. Wilkinson began his career as an engineer for the State Highway Department. In 1940 he moved to Suffolk as City Engineer and in 1943 he became town manager of Franklin, a post he held for seven years. In 1950, he returned to Suffolk as City Manager and served in this capacity until taking the Union Bag-Camp position in 1955. Mr. Wilkinson was a member of the Providence Forge Masonic Lodge; a past president of the Franklin Lions Club; a member of the Franklin Rotary Club; a past vice-president of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce; a board member of the Raiford and Southampton Memorial hospitals; and a board member of the Cecil B. Rawls Memorial Library at Courtland. In 1957 Mr. Wilkinson was acclaimed as "First Citizen of Franklin," an award made annually by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Franklin. He was a native of Charles City County and the son of the late William Landon and Sarah Letitia Deldrell [sic*] Wilkinson. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabel Bowman Wilkinson; a daughter, Miss Margaret Letitia Wilkinson of Franklin and two sisters, Miss Edna M. Wilkinson and Mrs. Frederic S. Bock, Jr., of Richmond. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Emanuel Episcopal Church, Franklin, by the Rev. Robert, E. Davis, rector of the church, and the Rev. Charles E. Stewart, retired rector of Sandston. "NED" WILKINSON BURIED HERE TODAY EDMOND NELSON "NED" WILKINSON WAS BURIED TODAY (MONDAY) IN POPLAR SPRING CEMETERY. The director of public relations for Union Bag-Camp Paper Corporation died Saturday night in Raiford Memorial Hospital. He was 50 years old. Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. in Emmanuel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Robert E. Davis, rector, and the Rev. Charles E. Stewart, retired rector of Sandston. Pallbearers were Hall Birdsong, W.L. Burrow, James L. Camp, Jr., Hill Carter, J.H. Holland, T.B. Kingsbury, 3rd, Erskine Watkins and R.E.L. Wheless. Husband of Mrs. Mabel Bowman Wilkinson, he was a son of the late William Landon and Mrs. Letitia Sarah Daiderell [sic*] Wilkinson of Charles City County. Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Miss Margaret Letitia Wilkinson of Franklin and two sisters, Miss Edna M. Wilkinson and Mrs. Frederic S. Boch Jr., of Richmond. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. FIRST CITIZEN Formerly a civil engineer with the Virginia Highway Department, he became Suffolk city engineer in 1940.
