J.W. WILLIAMS Hon. Junius W. Williams died at his home in Courtland, Va., Monday, February 24th, 1913. He was born in the county seat of Southampton in February, 1848 and was the youngest child of Spratley and Susan F. Williams. He was married first to Miss Mary Elizabeth Edwards, who died in 1907, and the second time to Miss Addie D. Sledge of Nansemond County. He leaves surviving him a widow, Addie D. Williams, and five children by his first marriage, Mrs. W.T. McLemore, Mrs. Bessie M. Wills, Mrs. H.B. McLemore, Mrs. E.F. Westbrook and Miss Clare Williams, all of Courtland, and one child by the last marriage, Juanita Williams. He was the brother of Mrs. M.E. Story, of Franklin, and an uncle of Dr. F.E. Williams, of Charlottesville, Va., Commonwealth’s Attorney E. Frank Story, Mrs. Ashley P. Cutchin and Miss Susie Story, of Franklin. He had been identified with the public life of his county and state from early manhood. He was elected sheriff of Southampton county April 15, 1889, and served until March 16, 1903, when he resigned to accept the position of bailiff to the State Corporation Commission, which he held until 1907, when he resigned to become a candidate for the House of Delegates from Southampton county, to which position he was elected and succeeded himself for the session at 1909. He took a prominent part in the legislature and was the author of the bill permitting the voters of Franklin magisterial district to vote on the dispensary question which later led to the abolition of the dispensary. He was the only member of the House of Delegates from Southampton county to serve for two successive terms. It was during his last term in the in the legislature that he was stricken with paralysis, which finally resulted in his death. He was never elected to any public office without opposition, but was never defeated in political affairs of any man in his county. He was a member of the Courtland M.E. church, of Courtland Lodge, No. 85, A.F. & A.M., and of Franklin Lodge, No. 51, Knights of Pythias. The funeral service was held from his home Tuesday, February 25, at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. H.P. Myers, pastor of the Courtland Methodist Church. Hon. Junius W.
