Williams of Courtland departed this life at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. John H. Kitchen, on the evening of January 1, in the 73rd year of her life. The deceased was a native of Southampton, having been born in Courtland in 1846. She was the daughter of the late John and Ann Radcliffe Yates, and came from fine old English stock. Her parents were born under the British flag, one came from Liverpool and the other form the Isle of Man, and they settled in Suffolk after coming to the States. The years of Mrs. Williams early girlhood were spent under the shadow of the Civil War. During the conflict and throughout the political and social reconstruction which followed the surrender of Lee, she played her part in the rebuilding of the new South, forming a strong and earnest character. At the age of 13 she united with the church of her fathers and gave herself to Christ, her Master. In the keeping of her sacred vows and in her saintliness she has left a fine example of her friends, her children and grandchildren. In 1872 she married the late Cooper C. Williams. This union was blessed with the following children: Mrs. John H. Kitchen, Mrs. J.E. Whitfield, Mrs. W.N. Thornton, all of Courtland; Mrs. W.F. Hunter of Enfield, N.C., Mrs. W.J. Briggs of Smithfield, the late Mrs. Annie Howell and Charles and Clarence Williams. About a year ago she met with an accident, and during her late months she was so weak that she could not leave her room, yet her spirit never lost its courage and its light. She kept her vivid interest in her friends and in all good things; and to come for a while into her presence was to dwell in an atmosphere made sweet with the clear consciousness of God. In the death of Mrs. Williams Southampton has lost a gentle, high-minded and unassuming woman. Her fidelity to her own family has borne fruit in the splendid lives of those she reared. Her fidelity to her church and to her community speaks in the lives of those whom she taught and who came under her influence. The funeral services were conducted in the Courtland cemetery by her rector, Rev. Francis R. Lee, on the morning of January 3. The active pallbearers were W.F. Hunter, J.H. Kitchen, W.N. Thornton, J.E. Whitfield, W.J. Briggs and A.E. Briggs; honorary, A.A. Williams, A.F Briggs, Dr. W.T. McLemore, E. Whitfield, R.G. Edwards, C.W. Richardson, Hon. W. J. Story, L.L. Manry, R.A.
