YOUNTS DIES AT 90 Charles R. Younts, a retired board chairman of Plantation Pipeline Co. and a philanthropist, died Thursday in Atlanta. He was 90. Mr. Younts owned a house in Franklin and contributed to the building of a new home for Franklin's American Legion which bears his name. He was predeceased by Mrs. Willie Camp Younts. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin. ****************************************************************************** OIL MAN-PHILANTHROPIST C.R. YOUNTS' RITE SLATED A graveside service for Charles R. Younts, retired chairman of the board of Plantation Pipeline Co. and a philanthropist, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin, Va. Mr. Younts, 90, died Thursday at his home here. A native of Pineville, N.C., Mr. Younts began his career in Charlotte at the age of 17 with Standard Oil Co. From then until 1941, he held various positions with Standard Oil and its affiliates in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York and New Jersey. In 1941, he was named president of the new Plantation Pipeline Co., based here. He retired from the company in 1960 as chairman of the board. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. His activities included serving as was treasurer and chairman of the Southern area YMCA; director and acting president of the Blue Ridge Assembly, Blue Ridge, N.C., a YMCA affiliate; president and director of Churches Homes for Business Girls Inc.; member of the board of trustees of Erskine College in South Carolina; and moderator and chairman of the finance committee of the Foreign Mission Board; and treasurer of the ministers' retirement plan of the General Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. He also was a member of the board of trustees and president of the Atlanta Metropolitan YMCA; director and chairman of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross; director and chairman of the Southern Industrial Relations Conference; and a member of the Atlanta committee of the National Probation and Parole Association. Mr. Younts was a member and elder of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Doraville, Ga. He also was a member of the Rotary Club of Atlanta, the Capital City Club, the Piedmont Driving Club, the University Yacht Club, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Newcomen Society of England, Sons of the American Revolution and Valley of Atlanta Consistory Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masons. In 1962, he received an honorary doctorate from Erskine College "for his outstanding work in the area of human relations, for his excellent and untiring effort in behalf of Erskine College and for his outstanding success as a Christian layman in the business world." Mr. Younts maintained a house in Franklin and contributed to the building of the new home of the American Legion Post there, which bears his name. He was the widower of Mrs. Willie Camp Younts. There are no immediate survivors. ****************************************************************************** CHARLES R. YOUNTS, PHILANTHROPIST AND PETROLEUM EXECUTIVE ATLANTA - Charles R. Younts, a retired petroleum executive and philanthropist and the husband of the late Willie Camp Younts, died in Atlanta on Thursday at the age of 90. Mrs. Younts, a native of Franklin, Va., and the daughter of the late Douglas and Ella Camp had died in June at the age of 92. A Pineville, N.C., native, Mr. Younts had begun his career in Charlotte with Standard Oil of New Jersey. In 1943 he became president of the then newly organized Plantation Pipeline Co., and continued at it's head until he retired in 1960 as chairman of the board. Throughout his business career he had been active in social-welfare, civic, and educational organizations, and following his retirement he devoted full time to such work. He had been chairman and treasurer of the Southern Area, Young Men's Christian Association and director and acting president of the YMCA athletic, the Blue Ridge (N.C.) Assembly. He also was president and director of Churches Homes for Business Girls Inc. and a member of the board of Erskine College. He was moderator and treasurer of the Ministers' Retirement Plan of the General Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and an elder of the denomination's church in Doraville, Ga. He also had been a member of the board and president of the Atlanta Metropolitan YMCA, director and chairman of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross, and director and chairman of the Southern Industrial Relations Conference. He was a member of the Atlanta Committee of the National Probation and Parole Association. In 1963, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Erskine College. He attended secondary school in Charlotte. After joining Standard Oil he held positions of increasing importance with the company and its affiliates in the Carolinas, New York and elsewhere before being elected in 1941 to the presidency of the Plantation Pipeline Co., whose headquarters were in Atlanta. During World War I, he served as a first sergeant with the 38th Division, Army Artillery Corps. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Atlanta, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, and Stanley Masonic Lodge 348. Mr. Younts had donated the land and the construction funds for the Franklin American Legion building, which bears his name. Survivors include nieces and nephews. The graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, Va., by Dr. Michael Clingenpeel and the Rev. Joseph Slane. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, is handling arrangements.
