SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Henry Applewhite, 11 May 1783 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Wills: Henry Applewhite, St.Luke Parish, Southampton Co, VA (1783) IN THE NAME OF GOD amen, I Henry Applewhite of the Parish of St.Luke in the County of Southampton being sick and weak in body but in perfect mind sense and memory do think this the most proper time to make this my Last Will and Testament and first I give my soul to God who gave it me, and my body to its mother-earth, and as to my worldly goods which it has pleased God to bestow on me I dispose off in the manner and form following, viz: Imprimis: I lend to my loving wife Ann Applewhite all my estate, except my stud horse, four years to raise and educate my children upon for that term and at the expiration of the said term I lend to my said wife the following part of my estate during her natural life or widowhood viz: great Will, Bob Isabel and Kate, three beds and furniture, six chairs, one cupboard, desk, safe, looking glass, one black walnut table and all the pewter pots, knives, forks &c. belonging to me, also two mares and one horse, ten head of cattle, and twenty five head of choice hogs, also my land and plantation whereon I now live, containing by estimation four hundred acres with the mill for her use during her natural life or widowhood, and after the death of marriage of my loving wife aforesaid, I give my land and mill so lent to my said wife to my two sons Henry and Thomas Applewhite to be equally divided between them and in case of either of their deaths without lawful issue, the surviving brother to have the said land and mill, to them and their heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath to my two loving sons Henry and Thomas Applewhite, after the death of my loving wife aforesaid Bob and Kate and Kate's future increase to be equally divided between them, and in case of the death of either of them without lawful issue, I give the negroes to the surviving brother, to them and their heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath to my loving son Arthur Applewhite the land and plantation which I bought of Hardy Harris to him and his heirs forever to be possessed of it after the education of four years. Item: I give to my loving daughter Sally Applewhite a negro girl named Tony to her and her heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving son Handy Applewhite a negro woman named Linus, also half of my land called Larks and Fates places to him and to his heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving son John Applewhite one half of my land called Larks & Fates places to be equally divided between him and Hardy, also a negro man called little Will to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving wife Ann Applewhite great Will and Isabell which I have before lent her, to be her own proper? right, and that she may dispose of them as she pleases to her and her heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving son Benjamin Applewhite two negroes named George & Charles to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving son William Applewhite two negroes named Ned and Matthew to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving son Arthur Applewhite a negro named Cain to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving daughters Priscilla, Janey, Beckey and Nancy Applewhite two negroes named Giles and Jade and their future increase to be equally divided among them or those of them that are then living when either of them shall arrive to lawful age or marry. Item: I lend to my loving wife Ann Applewhite a negro girl named Milly during her natural life, and at her death to be divided she and her increase if any amongst my four loving daughters or those of them living or their lawful issue if any, namely: Janey, Beckey, Priscilla and Nancy Applewhite. Item: I desire that my stud horse be sold as soon as possible after my death at public sale and at the expiration of four years I desire that all my personal estate not lent to my wife be also sold as above, and after my just debts are paid, I desire the money arising from the sale as mentioned to be equally divided amongst all my sons then living. Item: I give to my loving daughter Mary Barkham, wife of John Barkham, a negro woman which she has now in her possession named Rachel and all her increase shw now has or shall have to her and her heirs forever. Item: After the death of my loving wife aforesaid, I desire that all the personal estate lent her or what she may leave of it be sold and the money arising from such sale to be equally divided amongst all my children then living. Item: I desire my estate be not appraised. I also impower my son John to make a deed to William Ealy for a hundred acres land I sold him. Item: And lastly, I do nominate and appoint my loving wife Executor and my loving sons John & Arthur Applewhite Executors to this my Last Will and Testament, hereby making nul and void all former Wills and bequests heretofore by me made and confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and Testament. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of May 1783. Henry Applewhite (seal) Signed, sealed, published and declared to be the Last Will of the Testator in presence of: Richard Mason Selah Reese John Reese At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 10th day of July 1783 This Will was presented in court by the Executors therein named and proved by the oaths of Richard Mason and John Reese, two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Executors who made oaths as the law directs, a certificate is granted them for obtaining a probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon.
