Will of Samuel ATKINSON, proved May 12, 1785, Southampton County, Virginia, Will Book 4, 1783-1797. Samuel ATKINSON's Will In the name of God Amen the twelfth day of March 1782 I Samuel Atkinson being in perfect health & sound mind & memory & knowing it is appointed for all men once do die do make & ordain this to be my last will & testament in manner & form following. First I give my soul to the Almighty that gave it me & my body I leave to be buried at the descretion of my Executor hereafter named & touching (?) what worldy goods I have I dispose of as follows: Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Atkinson & his heirs forever the plantation whereon he now lives & ninety acres thereunto belonging. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Isham Atkinson and his heirs forever the plantation whereon I now live and one hundred acres land thereunto adjoining also one negro named Hark. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Jesse Atkinson & his heirs forever ninety-five acres of land be the same more of less adjoining the lands of Mr. Wm. Whitehead. Item: I give and bequeath unto Martha Newsom one cow & calf to her & her heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my wife one feather bed & furniture to her & her heirs forever. Item: I give unto my son in law Jesse Johnson five shillings current money. Item: I give unto my daughter Mary Johnson five shillings current money my will & desire is that all the remainder part of my estate of what kind so ever be equally divided between my wife Martha & my sons Isham & Jesse & my daughter Phebe Atkinson & their heirs forever. I do hereby constitute & appoint my son Isham Atkinson whole & sole Executor of this my last will & testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day & year above written. This will was presented in court by Isham Atkinson the Executor therein named and proved by the oaths of Thomas Edmunds and Samuel Edmunds two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
