All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Presley BARRETT (abt 1740-1814), will dated 8 Dec 1814, recorded Jan 1815 In the name of god amen I Presley Barrett, of the County of Southampton. being in a debilitated State of body and very weak but of perfect Sound mind and memory, thanks be to almighty god for the Same, do make and ordain this my Last will and Testament, in manner and form following (to Wit) In the first place, I commend my Soul to the great and almighty God, who first gave it, and my body to the dust from whence it came, and desire that my friends may inter me therein in a decent and comely manner, and then it is my Sincere desire, that my Executors, whom I Shall hereafter nominate and appoint to this my Last will and Testament, may after my decease pay all my just debts out of my estate and then __ Item I lend unto my dearly beloved wife Nancy Barrett the use of one negro man named Sawny, during her natural Life or Widowhood and Should my wife Nancy bring forth a child to Live, which She is now Pregnant with, It is my desire, and I also give and bequeath unto that same child at the death of its mother Nancy or marriage, the above mentioned and named negro man Sawny, to it and its heirs forever. But Should the child die, then in that case, it is my will and desire that my Daughter Fanny Barrett, have the above named negro man Sawney(sic) to her and to her heirs forever. Item, I also Lend unto my dearly beloved wife Nancy Barrett one feather bed and furniture, during her natural Life or widowhood_ I also wish and desire, that my Tract of Land whereon I now Live, be equally divided, and Lend unto my beloved wife Nancy Barrett, one half of the Said Land during her natural Life or widowhood, and at the death or marriage of my Said Wife Nancy it is my desire, that the Child She is now pregnant with, Should it Live to Come to the age of twenty one years, then and in that Case it is my will and desire that my Daughter Fanny Barrett, have all the half of my Land above mentioned, together with the feather bed and furniture as above mentioned to her and to her heirs forever. Item I also give and bequeath unto my early beloved Wife Nancy Barrett, ten Barrels of Corn and five hundred weight of Pork to her and her heirs forever being for her Support for one year. Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Fanny Barrett one Negro man named Moses, one negro Woman Named Mason and one negro boy named Archer, to her and to her heirs forever. Also one feather bed and furniture, and the other half of my Land unto her and her heirs forever _ And now Lastly it is my will and desire, that my negro man Named Solomon together with all the residue of my estate of every kind whatsoever, be sold for the express purpose of the payment of all my Just debts, and the Surplus of the Sale if any is my will and desire that it Should return from the hands of my executor to my daughter Fanny Barrett, to her and to her heirs forever. And Lastly I do now nominate and appoint my friends James Jones and Arthur Bowing my whole and Sole executors to this my Last will and Testament, hereby revoking ["all" struck] and disannulling all other will or Wills, by me heretofore made _ Given under my hand and Seal, this eighth day of December 1814.
