All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Joshua BARNES (1702-1762), will dated 12 Aug 1762, recorded 1 Oct 1762 I Joshua Barnes of Southampton County in Virginia do make constitute and ordain this my last will & testament in manner & form following to wit, I give devise & bequeath unto my dear and loving wife Lucy the use and profit of all my stock of cattle hoggs & five ewes & lambs and all the crop of Corn Tob.o &c. with all the provisions in the house & the use of my Horse with one feather bed and furniture two Iron potts one frying pan and four pewter dishes for and during her natural life or widowhood. Item. I give devise and bequeath unto my son Brittain my plantation & all my lands with one feather bed and furniture and all my Joyners & turner's tools and two pewter plates to him & his heirs forever. Item. I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Edee Barnes one feather Bed & furniture to her & her heirs forever. Item. I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Chastity Barnes one feather Bed and furniture to her & heirs forever. Item. I give devise and bequeath to my son Burwell Barnes my leather Breetches one shirt & two pewter plates to him and his heirs. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Buxton my white leather breaches one check cotton Jacket & two puter plates to him & his heirs all the rest of my estate after my Just debts are paid I give one third to my wife Lucy & the other two thirds to be equally divided between my six children names as followeth Burwell Buxton Bailey Sally Benjamin and Phereby. And lastly I do appoint my son Brittain and my Cousin Benjamin Barnes to be my ex'ors of this my last will & testament as witness my hand this twelfth day of August 1762. This will was presented in court by Brittain Barnes and Benjamin Barnes the executors therein named proved by the oaths of Job Wright and Sarah Oberry and by the solemn affirmation of James Jordan Scott / one of the people called Quakers and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the afs'd ex'ors who made oath according to law certificate is granted them for obtaining a probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
