Thomas BARNES (1699-1770), will dated 18 May 1769, proved 10 May* 1770 

Thos.      In the name of God amen the eighteenth day of may in the year 
 Barnes    of our lord 1769 I thomas Barnes of Southampton county Virginia 
 will ~^~  planter being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind & memory 
           thanks be given unto God do make and ordain this my last will 
           and testament in manner & form following Viz ~^~ 

Imprimis   I give to my dearly beloved wife Martha all my stock of cattle 
           & hogs together with my household furniture excepting one 
           bed and furniture, which I give to my daughter Mary Barnes 
           & after the death of my said wife to be equally divided among my 
           children ~^~ 

  Item     I give my well beloved Son Nathan Barnes whom together with 
           my wife I likewise ordain constitute and appoint ex'ors of this my 
           last will and testament all & Singular my lands messuages and 
           tenements by him freely to be possessed & enjoyed  In witness whereof 
           I have hereunto Set my hand & Seal the day & Year above written 

           Signed, Sealed & published in presence of us          his

          /                       At a Court held for the County of Southampton 
           the 14th. day of June 1770 ~      This will was presented in court 
           by Nathan Barnes one of the ex'ors therein named & proved by the 
           oaths of Edmund Day Jun. & Charles Joyner two of the witnesses 
           thereto & ordered to be recorded  And on the motion of the said ex'or 
           who made oath according to Law certificate was granted 
           him for obtaining a probat whereof in due form giving security 
           whereupon &c
