SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Nathan Barnes, 15 Jun 1790 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Nathan Barnes of the County of Southampton being in perfect health at present, thanks be to god, but calling to mind the mortality of my body & knowing that it is appointed for all to die do constitute & ordain this my last will and testament in form & manner following: Item: I give to my loving wife Martha five negros Rachel, David Cherry, Easter & Jacob to her & her disposal forever. Also I give her all the household & kitchen furniture she was possess'd of on the day intermarried with her during life in widowhood. Item: I give to my son John Barnes one half of my land & plantation I am now in possession of also two negroes Paiss & Coy to him & his heirs forever. Item: I give to my son Britain Barnes two neg. Cherry & George, one feather bed & furniture & sorrell filly to him & his heirs forever. Item: I give to my son Cordale Barnes the other half of my land and plantation, also two negroes David & Easter, one feather bed and furniture and one horse called Marcus to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my daughter Jeansy Barnes two negros Hannah & Peter, one feather bed & furniture & thirty pounds gold or silver to her & heirs forever. Item: I give to my sister Mary Barnes twenty five pounds, one cow & calf & one sow & piggs during her life in virginity. My will and desire is that the remainder of my estate undispos'd of be sold on 12 months credit and my just debts paid ouot of it and the balance to be generally divided between my loving wife Martha & four children: John, Britain, Cordale & Jeansy. And I do also appoint my wife Martha, son John & David Barrow Executors of this my Last Will & Testament given under my hand and seal this 15 day of June Anno Domini 1790. Nathan Barnes (seal) At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 10th day of October 1793 This writing purporting the Last Will & Testament of Nathan Barnes dec'd was presented in court whereupon James Wilkinson, Benjamin Drew & William Vick Junior being sworn deposed that they believ'd the said Will was wholly written & sign'd by the said Nathan Barnes on consideration whereof the said writing is established as the Last Will & Testament of Nathan Barnes therein nam'd who made oath accord'g to law, Certificate is granted him for obtaining a Probate thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
