Southampton Co., VA - Edmund Barrett Will - 1804 ------------------------------------------------ Will of Edmund Barrett, Will Book 5, pp 501-2 Southampton Co VA 12 May 1804 In the name of God and man, I Edmund Barrett Senior of Southampton County and State of Virginia being sick and weak in body but in perfect mind and memory thanks to God for it and calling unto mind the mortallity of my body knowing it is appointed for all to die, do make and order this to be my last will and testament principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hand of almighty god and my body do the ground to be buried in a Christian like manner and as tuching such worldy estate which it has pleased God to bless me with in this life. I give in the following manner. I give to my daughter Nancy Newsom, twelve shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my daughter Chrity (sic) Thorp twelve shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my daughter Patience Everit twelve shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my daughter Sally Barrett twelve shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my daughter Winnie Whitfield one featherbed and furniture which she has now in possession. Also I give her forty shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my son Benjamin Barrett twelve shillings current money to him and his heirs forever. I give to my son Jesse Barrett one half my Black Smith tools to him and his heirs forever. I give to my son Burwell Barrett twelve pounds current money to him and his heirs forever. I give to my daughter Rhody Worrell twelve shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my daughter Bitha Rawls twenty shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my daughter Christa West one cow and calf and twelve shillings current money to her and her heirs forever. I give to my son Jordan Barrett one half of my plantation and land, belonging thereto. I also give to him one colt called Britton, also one cow, also one sow and pigs, also one half of my Black Smith tools and all my Coopers and shoe making tools to him and his heirs forever. I give to my loving wife Janet Barrett the other half of my plantation and land, belonging thereto to her natural life in widowhood and at her death or marriage, I give the same to my son Jordan Barrett to him and his heirs forever. Then after my funeral Charges and Debts paid, I give to my loving wife Jenet Barrett all the remained residue of my estate that I have not already given both real and personal to her natural life and after her death, I give five pounds eight shillings to be equally divided between Anna Newsom, Charity Thorp, Patience Everitt, Sally Barrett, Winney Whitfield, Benjamin Barrett, Rhoda Worrell, Bitha Rawls and Christa West to them and their heirs forever and then all the rest of my I give to my son Jordan Barrett to him and his heirs forever. I do hereby appoint my son Burwell Barrett and my wife Jennet Barrett my hole and sole executors to this my last will and testament revoking all other wills by me before made.
