SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Charles Briggs Sr, 27 Nov 1799 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Charles Briggs Sr of Southampton County being of sound mind and memory do give and dispose of my worldly estate as follows: I give the use and labour of my negro girl and her increace (named Charlotte) to my daughter Martha Edmunds during her natural life and after her death to my grand daughter Susan Edmunds and her heirs forever. I give & bequeath to my son Henry Briggs and his heirs forever one negro boy named Peter, one good feather bed, and furniture, my young bay colt got by Breigmatt?, my pit saw & hand mill stones & a trunk. I give and bequeath to my son William Briggs and his heirs forever all the land I hold on the east side of the road leading to Southampton courthouse, also that tract of land I bought of William West Sr? also one negro boy named Gimmy, all my silver plate, new? desk & large looking glass, one feather bed and furniture, one young bay horse called (Mountain Leader) and the reversion of all the remainder of my lands after his mothers death and the single life of his sisters are determined. Tis also my desire if he should die before he comes of age that all his lands may decend to his brother Henry Briggs and his heirs forever, also I give to my son William all my share in the mill built by Jordan Jones. I give unto my daughter Sarah Briggs and her heirs forever one negro girl named Nancy, and her increace forever, also 1 feather bed & furniture, one chest of drawers and one trunk. I give unto my daughter Frances Briggs and her heirs forever, one negro girl named Nelly, and her increace forever, one feather bed & furniture and one trunk. I give unto my daughter Anna Briggs and her heirs forever one negro girl named Fortune and her increase forever, also one feather bed and furniture & one trunk. I give unto my daughter Marry Briggs and her heirs forever one negro girl named Jenny and her increase forever, also one feather bed & furniture & one trunk. I give unto my daughter Rebeckah Briggs and her heirs forever, one negro girl named Esther and her heirs forever, also one feather bed and furniture and trunk. I give unto my daughter Dorothy Briggs and her heirs forever one negro girl named Lizza and heer heirs forever also 1 feather bed and furniture and one trunk. I give the use of my plantation and lands on the west side of the main road leading to Southampton Courthouse to my beloved wife Sarah during her natural life as also to all my daughters had by her during their single lives, also I leave unto my wife during her natural life five negroes namely: Moses, Sarah, Anna, Sam & Limrick and afterwards to be equally divided between all my children had by her. Also in case Aleck Davis should fail in paying up his bond and interest by the time limited as per agreement, I leave Cresa and all her children to my wife, her (natural?) life and afterwards to be divided between all the children I had by her. Also my desire is that after all my debts and legacies are paid off that all the debts owing me cash or bond or sales of goods that may be on hand at my death may be equally divided between my wife Sarah and the children I had by her - and the children's shares to be put on interest for their support during their infancy, also all my personal estate (slaves excepted) not herebefore given away may continue in my wifes hand for the support of her and children and to give them as they need and can be spared as they comne of age or marry. Also my desire is that all my slaves not above mentioned or given away may continue in my wifes possession for the use of my children had by her to be allotted in just proportion to them and their heirs forever as they come of age or marry by some good persons chosen for that purpose by my Executors. If my wife should marry again or die my desire is that an equal distribution may immediately take place in every case whatever. I do hereby constitute and appoint my friends Col. Benjamin Blunt, Benjamin B. Rosser, my wife Sarah & son William Briggs Executors of this my Last Will & Testament given under my hand seal this 27th November 1799. Benjamin Blunt and Benjamin B. Rosser, the Executors therein named and prov'd by the oaths of Phillip Davis & John Nicholson, two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
