John Britt Senr of Southampton County being of Sound and Disposing mind & memory do make & ordain this my last will and testament in maner and form following first & formost I recommend my soul to Almighty God that gave it and my body to be Deacently buried and as for what wourdly goods it hath pleased God to bestow upon me I dispose as follows Impremis Item I give to my Son Benjamin Britt Forty pounds it being the sum due me from him for a mare _ de him. Item I leave all my land to be sold and the money equally divided amongst my five Sons viz John Britt, Jese Britt, Henry Britt, James Britt and William Britt do them & their heirs forever but in case either of them dies without lawful Issue I devise the money to be Divided amongst them that is Surviving. Item I give to my son William Britt One Bay Cold & feather bed & furniture but in Case he should die without Issue I devise they shall be divided among my five sons mentioned. Item I give to my wife Marthat Britt one feather bed & furniture one cow & calf one sow & pigs Two ews one pot one dish & four plates & lend my said wife the use of my Negro woman Rose as long as she lives a widow but after her marriage or death I leave the said Negro Rose [page 254] to be sold & the money Equally divided among my five Sons above mentioned and in case Either dies without Issue for it to be equally among the others above mentioned in the land. Item I leave all the remainder of my Estate to be sold & the money equally divided amongst all of my children after my first debts being paid I do appoint my sons John Britt & Jese Britt Executors of this my last will & testament In Witness whereof I’ve hereunto set my hand & affixed my Seal the day & year first above written. Written Witness John (B) Britt Thomas Turner John Rogers In a court held for the County of Southampton the 14th day of February 1779. This will was presented in court by John Britt & Jese Britt the executors therein named and proved by the oaths of Thomas Turner & John Rogers two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of the said excors who made oath according to law Certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form giving Security whereupon.
