SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - James Brooks, 5 Jul 1798 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I James Brooks being in my perfect sence and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form as followeth: Imprimis: I lend one half of all the lands lying on the east side of the county road to my wife Hannah during her life or widowhood with one bay colt, all my stock of hoggs, one feather bed and furniture. Item: I give and bequeath unto my grandson John Sharrs, commonly called John Brooks, the son of my daughter Elizabeth Brooks, the other half of my land on the same side of road together with one bay mare and at my wifes death or day of marriage, the lands I have lent her, I give my aforementioned grandson, to him and his heirs forever. In case my grandson should die without lawful issue, I then, and in that case, give all the land I have aforementioned to my daughter Sarah Read to her & heirs forever and above dollars to be paid out of the money arising from such property as I may leave to be sold Item: I leave all the land lying on the east side of the country road by my Executor hereafter mentioned to be sold, the money arising from such sale to go to the discharge of my just debts. Item: I leave the balance of my estate not herein mentioned to be equally divided between my grandson John Brooks and Hannah, my wife. I appoint my daughter Sarah Reas my whole and sole Executor of this my Last Will & Testament. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand & fixed my seal this fifth day of July one thousand seven hundred & ninety eight.
