In the name of God Amen, I John Claud of the county of Southampton and 
state of Virginia being through the abundant Mercy and goodness of God 
weak in body yet of a sound and perfect mind and memory do make and 
ordain this to be my last will and Testament In manner and form 
following Viz I first recommend my soul to the Almighty God who gave it 
and my body to be buried in a Christian like manner to the discretion of 
my Executor hereafter mentioned and as to what worldly goods it has 
pleased God to bestow on me while in this life dispose of them in the 
following manner. viz
Item Firstly It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid and 
after that I lend unto my loving wife Polly Claud all my lands and also 
all my Negroes namely AMY, ANTHONY BEN MASON AND JACOB and all the 
increase of my Negroes also my stock of all kinds my household and 
kitchen furniture and all my plantation utensils to her during her 
natural life or widowhood and at her death or marriage Item I give unto 
my son William Claud the sum of Five Shillings to him and his heirs 
forever. Secondly I give unto my daughter Charlotte one feather bed and 
furniture which she has now in possession to her and her heirs forever. 
Thirdly I give and bequeath to my daughter Milbry Claud one feather bed 
and furniture to her and her heirs forever . Fourthly, I give and 
bequeath unto my daughter Rebecca Claud one feather bed and furniture to 
her and her heirs forever. Fifthly I give and bequeath unto my daughter 
Nancy A. Claud one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs 
forever and Sixthly I give unto my son Phillip J. Claud one shot gun and 
one mule which is name Flomer to him and his heirs forever and Seventhly 
I also give and bequeath unto my other three sons John T. Claud, James 
W. Claud and Jesse J. Claud the sum of thirty Eighthly I give and 
bequeath unto my daughter Mary Ann Claud one feather bed and furniture 
to her and her heirs forever. Where if my wife Polly Claud should get 
married again I give and bequeath their one ninth part of my estate viz 
whi8ch is an equal division with my nine children above mentioned to his 
and her heirs forever and at her death or marriage the property which I 
have lent unto her are to be sold at public auction and the money 
arising thereupon shall be Equally divided between my nine children 
namely Charlotte Milbry William Nancy James Phillip John Mary Ann and 
Jesse. Item lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my wife Polly 
Claud and my sons Phillip J. Claud and John T. Claud my Executor to this 
my last will and Testament. As witnessed I have hereunto set my hand and 
affixed my seal this 7th day of December A.D. one thousand Eight hundred

At a court in the county of Southampton the 18 day of January 1830 This 
last will and testament of John Claud decd. was proved by the oath of 
Newt  Drew  Jeremiah Drew & Persons Westbrook the witness thereto and 
ordered to be recorded. And on the notion of Polly Claud the executor 
therein named who made each and together with David Westbrook John Ivey 
and Newt Drew her securities entered into and acknowledge at sons in the 
penalty of Four thous  and dollars conditioned as the Law directs 
certificate is granted the said Polly Claud for obtaining a probate of 
the said will in due form Liberty being borrowed for the other Exors 
therein named to be reported in the probate when they think fit.
