All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ John CRENSHAW (d. 1786), will dated 3 Dec 1784, presented 14 Dec 1786, proved 14 Jun 1787 In the name of God Amen I John Crenshaw being sick and weak in Body but in perfect mind and memory thanks be to god for it and calling unto mind the Mortallity of my Body and knowing it is appointed for all to die do make and Ordain this my last Will & Testament principally and first of all I Recommend my soul into the hands of God and my Body to the ground to be buried in a Christian like manner and as touching such worldly estate which it has pleased God to bless me with in this life I Give in the following manner and form I Give to my loving wife Elizabeth Crenshaw one horse called Braddock, one spining and Linen Wheel, one small trunk, her choice of my Feather Beds and furniture, my best chest and Two Tables, also my Negro Dick to her disposal. In consideration of the maintenance and schooling of my two children Elijah and Polley, I Give to my wife Elizabeth Crenshaw the use of all the residue of my estate both real and personal during her life or widowhood. I Give to my Son Elijah Crenshaw after my wifes decd. or marriage all my land on the east side of the Tar Kiln Branch and part on the west side Bounded by Begining at the mouth of the said branch and running up the same to where the Path leading from my house to the road leading from Doct. Brownes to st. Georges Chappel crosses the said Branch, Then on a line of marked Trees near a north course to my line which includes all my land on the east side of the said Line and Tar kiln branch also my negro Nat, my Guns and all my Tools of any kind and my Desk, also one half my other personal Estate to be allotted and set apart at the discretion of my Ex'ors to him and the lawful Issues of his Body and in case their should be no such Issue to my Daughter Polley Crenshaw and the lawful Issues of his[sic] body in case their should be no such Issue, I Give the same to Elemuel Darden son of Benjamin Darden decd. to him and his heirs forever_ I Give to my Daughter Polly Crenshaw after my wifes decd. or marriage all the remainder of my Land and one Negro Girl called Hannah and the other half of my personal Estate which is not already given to be allotted and set apart as aforesaid to her and the Lawfull Issue of her Body and for the want of such Issue to my son Elijah Crenshaw and to the Lawful Issues of his body and for the want of such Issue I Give the same to Elemuel Darden son of Benjamin Darden decd. to him and his heirs forever ~ I do hereby appoint William Thomas, Saml. Maget (of Nichs.), Jacob Turner, William Maget (of Nichs.) my whole and Sole Executors to this my last will and Testament revoking all other Wills by me before made In Witness Whereof I the said John Crenshaw hath hereunto set my hand and Seal this third day of December Anno Domini one Thousand Seven hundred eighty four. This will was presented in court by Jacob Turner the ex'or therein named, proved by the oath of Robert Daughtry & continued. And a court held for the said County of Southampton the 14th day of June 1787. This will was further proved by the oath of Nichs.
