SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Samuel Cobb, 11 Apr 1785 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Wills: Samuel Cobb, Southampton Co, VA (1789) IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I, Samuel Cobb of the County of Southampton being sick and weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and memory, thanks be to almighty God for the same, but calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and knowing that it is appointed once for all men to die do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First, I give and bequeath unto my son Matthew Cobb the land & plantation whereon he has resided and occupied containing by supposition sixty acres to him his heirs & assigns forever. Item: I give devise and bequeath unto my son Kinchen Cobb the land and plantation whereon I now live or so much thereof as included in the following bounds, viz: beginning at a black gum an elbow tree standing in the first runing swamp to the eastward of the plantation not far from the corner of Demsey Casper's corn field on old field then down the main run of the said swamp untill it is to it as will Gresswitt's Orphan line at a white oak thence turning bending on said Orphans line untill it joins the place of land given to my son Matthew Cobb thence bend thence bending on that line untill it joins Doctor Samuel Browns line thence by his line untill it joins Dempsey Caspers line thence by his line to the beginning containing by supposition fifty acres, also one gun called my small gun, to him and his heirs and assigns forever. Item: I give bequeath and devise unto my sons Samuel and Bengamin Cobb the remainder of my lands with the improvements thereon contained in the following bounds, viz: beginning at the same black gum as the tract given to my son Kinchen Cobb does thence running bending on Demsey Caspers line untill it joins Simon Q? Mur fence line thence runing bending on said Mur fence line untill it joins Henry Cobbs line at or in the cypress swamp thence down the run of the said swamp untill it joins Gress Witts Orphan line thence binding on their line untill it joins the line of the tract given to my son Kinchen thence binding up the aforesaid swamp as is represented the first running swamp to the eastward of my manner plantations to the first station containing by supposition one hundred acres which said land and plantation or charings included in said boundaries is will and desire and intent should be equally divided between my said sons Samuel and Bengamin Cobb and that Simon Vaughn and my brother Henry Cobb divide the same with as much judgment as they can from so as to let my said sons Samuel and Bengamin Cobb have an equal share as near as can be estimated to them their heirs and assigns forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Cobb my large hunting gun to him his heirs and assigns forever. Item: It is my will and desire that all my sons has the priviledge of cutting and making use of as much cypress timber as will answer and be sufficiently for their own use and not otherwise and further it is my will and desire that all of my said sons have an equal share of what liquor may yearly be made or raised from off the orchards or all the land before givin away for the term of five years next to come and no longer also it is my will that after my just debts are paid that all the remaining part of my estate not before given away be equally divided between all my children and my loving wife Mary Cobb to them their heirs and assigns forever. Lastly, I appoint my two sons Matthew and Kinchen Cobb Executors to this my Last Will and Testament revoking and disannuling all former Will or Wills by me heretofore made and allowing that no other to be my Last Will and Testament. This Will was presented in Court by Matthew and Kinchen Cobb, Executors therein named, proved by the oaths of Dempsey Casper and Thomas Pope, two of the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Executors who made oath according to law, Certificate is granted them for obtaining a Probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
