Will of John Cooper, Southampton County VA, 1834 Book 11, pg. 334 I., John Cooper a native of the State of Virginia and an inhabitant of the County of Southampton in said state, being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory, do make and ordain this to be may last Will and Testament in manner and form following. First: I leave to my beloved wife Jane, as and for her dower, for and during her natural lfe one negro woman named Patience and one Third part of one of my plantations (her choice) and after her death I desire the same may be equally divided among my three Children John, James, and Emeline Cooper to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Second: I give and bequeath unto my two sons John T. Cooper and James Cooper all the lands and appurtanances with which I may die seized and possessed to be equally divided between them, and to their heirs and assigns forever. Third: I give to my son John T Cooper, one negro boy named Jim, one blue chest, one gun, powder horn and box to him and his heir and assigns forever. Fourth: I give to my son James Cooper one negro boy names Moses to him and to his heirs and assigns forever. Fifth: I give to my daughter Emeline Cooper one negro boy named Zebe, one bed and furniture, and one trunk to her and to her heirs and assigns forever. Sixth: All the residue of my estate of what nature or kind soever not herein before particularly disposed of I give to my three children, John, James, and Emeline to be equally divided among them and to their heirs and assigns forever. Lastly: I hereby constitute and appoint my friend Jesse Parker Sr of the County of Southampton in the State of Virginia the executor of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other or former Wills and Testaments by me heretofore made. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set and hand and affixing my seal this first day of March in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred and thirty four. Williams Anthony Vaughan At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 20th day of April 1835 The last Will and Testament of John Cooper dec'd was proved by the oaths of David D Savage, Jacob T. Williams and Anthony Vaughan the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And thereupon for reasons appearing to the Court and because the Executor therein named has not attended here to qualify as such, on the motion of David D Savage and William Lawrence who made oath and together with Carr Bowers their security entered into and acknowleged a bond in the penalty of five thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, they are appointed to collect and preserve the good and chattels of the said John Cooper dec'd untill the Executor in the said will shall appear and qualify, or untill the further order of the Court.
